Happenings in Hanson: Country Store Hoedown draws good-sized crowd

Hello to all of you and I will tell you that today is Wednesday, today is Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday. Yesterday was Tuesday and tomorrow will be Thursday, but today is Wednesday. That is just one of the songs we sing to get our day started. Hope this gets to you on time.

Everybody's talking about the weather, its cold. Well it is time for the weather to start being a little chilly. We got a good taste of the cold. We camped out at my mama's on the coldest weekend that we have had since last march. But hey we just build a fire and made the best of it.

I enjoyed a day at the flea market last week. Found a few bargains at my favorite building, Mr. Gene's. Made my usual stop at the fried apple pie table. Make a quick run through chicken alley and I mean quick because it smells.

Delhiites run to stay fit

New Delhi, Oct. 15 (PTI): Kenyans Francis Kibiwott and Lineth Chepkirui claimed top men's and women's honours as denizens of all ages poured into the streets in thousands at the Delhi half marathon here today. It was an early Sunday for Delhiites who put on their sporting shoes and clogged the streets making the world's richest marathon, with a total prize money of USD 150,00, an event to remember. The second edition of the Hutch half marathon saw participation from 27,000 people with the two shorter races - 7 kilometer Great Delhi Run and Senior Citizen's run of 4 km - being huge crowd pullers. Bollywood, sports and corporate world also made their presence felt with actor Rahul Bose leading the pack from the front. Kapil Dev, Vijay Amritraj, Gulshan Grover also cheered Delhi to run. Everyone ran or atleast made an effort to run amidst cheers from on lookers, as the streets turned sweat-soaked even before the sun became a scorcher.

38th District rivals waging a chase of a race

Rep. John McCoy is slow and deliberate, often pausing a few seconds to answer questions. His flat-top crew cut, circa 1950, illustrates his no-nonsense, pragmatic style.

On the campaign trail in this district that runs from the northern border of the Tulalip Reservation to the southern city limits of Everett, McCoy — a Tulalip Indian and general manager of the tribes' Quil Ceda Village retail development and casino — pounds the streets in jeans and the same pair of Nike shoes he has worn for his past two elections.

Colleagues who have worked with the two-term Democrat in Olympia refer to his manner as "quiet strength."

"He gets things done. You're not going to see John grandstanding," said Rep. Mike Sells, who holds the other legislative seat in this historically Democratic and blue-collar district.

Jury Awards Landowner $100,000 In Eminent Domain Case

SPRINGDALE -- A Washington County jury deliberated less than 30 minutes before awarding a Springdale couple $100,000 for land taken by city officials to extend Har-Ber Avenue to Arkansas 112.The city offered the couple $23,900.Mike Baker, who lives on Har-Ber Avenue between Jones Road and Arkansas 112, had originally asked city officials for $446,400.But Washington County Circuit Judge Mark Lindsay, in pretrial motions, granted the city's motions to exclude evidence that changed Baker's strategy.Lindsay ruled Baker could not introduce into evidence his plans to construct another warehouse on his property before the road split his property. Baker was trying to recover the costs for loss of the warehouse.Likewise, Lindsay upheld the city's motion to exclude conversations Baker had with Mayor Jerre Van Hoose and Patsy Christie, planning and community development director, regarding the warehouse construction.

Students in debate on what makes us British

BEING British is not about what you wear or your religious beliefs - it stands for tolerance, and promoting diversity.

That was the verdict of Bolton Sixth Form College students who joined in the debate about race and multi-culturalism by holding a British Day, discussing what constituted being British.

They dismissed MP Jack Straw's preference for Muslim women to remove their veil - and accused him of pettiness.

Activities included a "Famous Briton Quiz", a discussion on the changing ethnic profile of Britain and a discussion on why communities from different ethnic groups seem to group together The day was organised by Bob Hindle, senior college manager, to explore what people have in common rather than how they are different.

EU Footwear Levy Sparks Asian Ire

The anti-dumping levy imposed by the European Union on leather shoes from China and Vietnam, which came into effect Saturday, faces strong criticism from the two countries as well as local importers.

China called the anti-dumping measures illegal and threatened to retaliate. In a press conference Thursday, Commerce Ministry spokesman Chong Quan said, "The anti-dumping measures taken by the E.U. against Chinese leather shoes lack a legal basis and factual evidence and harm the rights of Chinese leather shoe manufacturers."

He noted that the investigation into the dumping and the adjudication procedures taken by the E.U. did not conform to anti-dumping regulations of either the E.U. or the World Trade Organization.

"The Chinese side will closely watch this issue and see how it develops and will maintain the right to take corresponding measures," Chong concluded.
